Is é an chéad tuairisc ar scolaíocht oideachas i mBearna ranganna sa séipéal ar an mbóthar go Trá na gCeann.  Lean an oideachas sa séipéal go dtí gur osclaíodh scoil nua na mbuachaill in 1864 - in aice na cúirte liathróid-láimhe ar thalamh Loinscigh. Foirgneamh aon-seomra amháin a bhí ann, gur teach cónaithe anois é le muintir Ó Bhroin, suite trasna ón séipéal atá in úsáid faoi láthair.

The first recorded mention of schooling or education in Barna relates to classes being held in the Chapel on the road to Silver Strand. This continued to be the place of education until the new boys' school was opened in 1864 – beside the handball alley on the Lynch estate. This was a one-classroom building and is now the house owned by the O’Byrne family, opposite the present church.

The photo above shows: "Scoil na mBuachaill, Bearna. 15.2.1926".  Many thanks to Cáit Fagan (Seoighe), Bearna & Ros a'Mhíl, a past pupil herself and whose Grandfather John Fagan appears in this photograph.

An tUasal Mícheál Mac Donnchadha, Caitliceach, a bhí mar mhúinteoir sa scoil seo. Íocadh phingin an scoláire in aghaidh na seachtaine. Bhí thart ar 30 nó 40 dalta aige. Seomra ranga 30 x 20 x 12 troigh a bhí ann.

The teacher was Mr. Michael McDonagh, a Catholic. He was paid 2 pence per week per scholar. There were around 30 or 40 pupils. The room was 30ft x 20ft x 12ft.

Barna Pupils in the 1920s and 1930s

Thosaigh beirt deirfiúr, dárbh ainm Loinscigh, scoil aon-seomra do chailíní i dTeach Bhearna. "A location of more pleasing prospect would be hard to imagine" an cur síos a bhí ag James Hardiman faoi Theach Bhearna, ina leabhar stairiúl ón 19ú chéad. Tógadh an teach seo sna blianta 1700 ag muintir Loinscigh, ceann de Threibheanna na Gaillimhe. Seasann an teach ar shuíomh Caisleán Alluráin ón 16ú chéad. Breathnaíonn an teach ó dheas trasna Trá na gCeann go sléibhte Chondae an Chláir agus an Bhoireann.
D'fhreastal idir 15 agus 25 cailín ar scoil anseo. Seo an ionad oideachais do chailíní na háite go dtí gur tógadh an scoil nua i Saor Phort in 1856. Seomra ranga 40 x 20 x 12 troigh a bhí ann. Bhí 'foirmeacha' binsí ann, de thart ar 8 - 9 troigh an ceann, le suí orthu, mar a bhí i scoil na mbuachaillí.

Two Miss Lynches started a one-classroom school for girls in Barna House.

"A location of more pleasing prospect would be hard to imagine" is how James Hardiman's history, written in the 1800's, described Barna House.  Built in the 1700's by the Lynch Family, one of the historic tribes of Galway, Barna House stands on the site of the earlier 16th century Castle of the O'Hallorans.  The house looks south across Trá na gCeann / Silver Strand towards the Hills of Clare and the Burren.

Classes here were attended by between 15 – 25 girls. This was the place of education for girls until the new school was built in the townland of Freeport in 1856. This was a single room measuring 40ft x 20ft x 12ft.  The furniture comprised of ‘forms’ (benches) about 8 to 9 ft long and tables, the same as in the boys' school.

De bhar laghdú ar an méid buachaill sa cheantar, tháinig an dá scoil le chéile in Iúil 1937, ar shuíomh scoil na gcailíní in Saor Phort (áit atá an scoil faoi láthair). Cuireadh leis an bhfoirgneamh agus thug an scoil seo oideachas do bhuachaillí agus cailíní na háite.

Due to the decline in the number of boys in the area, the two schools were amalgamated in July 1937, on the site of the girls' school in Freeport (current school site).  It was enlarged and catered for the educational needs of both boys and girls in the area.

Scoil Naomh Sheamais, Bearna

Bhí dá sheomra ranga, seomraí cótaí agus leithris taobh amuigh. Tháinig an teas ó thine oscailte i ngach seomra agus bhí an nós ag na páistí dá phíosa móin a thabhairt ar scoil leo in aghaidh an lae chun cur leis an tine.
Múineadh do na buachaillí Léitheoireacht, Scríbhneoireacht, Uimhríocht, Tíreolas (Éireannach agus Eorpach) agus Cuntasaíocht, chomh miath le Triantánacht, Ailgéabar, Eolaíocht agus Garraíadóireacht. Na daltaí a d'fhan ar scoil chomh fada le Rang 7, bhíodar in ann dul díreach chuig an ollscoil.

There were two classrooms, cloakrooms and outdoor toilets.  Heating was provided by a fire in each classroom and it was the custom that each child attending school brought two sods of turf with them daily to provide fuel for the fires.

The subjects taught in the boys' school were Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, Geography (Irish and European) and Book-Keeping, which went as far as double entry, cash accounts and personal accounts. Trigonometry, Algebra, Science and Horticulture were also taught.  If pupils stayed in school long enough to finish 7th class, they could go straight to university.

Bearna pupils 1943

Níor tháinig páistí ar scoil go rialta go dtí go rabhadar in aois seacht mbliana. Bhí go leor le déanamh taobh amuigh den scoil san earrach, sa samhradh agus ag tús an fhómhair. Bhí feamainn le bailiú san earrach (le cur ar an talamh), móin le baint sa samhradh agus ansin an féar le baint. San fhómhair, bhí na barraí le tógáil ó na páirceanna - ina measc fataí, turnapaí, meaingil agus coirce. D'fhás chuile teach a chuid bia féin agus bhí na páistí ag teastáil go géar chun obair a dhéanamh don teaghlach.

The attendance of children at school was not continuous after the age of 7.  The busy seasons were spring, summer and early autumn.  There was sea-weed to be gathered in spring (to fertilise the land), turf to be cut in summer and then the harvest had to be saved.  In the autumn, among a wide range of crops, the main focus was on potatoes, turnips, mangolds and oats. Homesteads had to be as self-sufficient as possible so the children were needed to help at home at busy times.

Sna 1960aidí agus 1970aidí, tháinig méadú thapaidh ar dhaonra Bhearna.  I 1971, cuireadh prefab dá-sheomra leis an scoil agus faoi 1971 bhí ceathrar ag múineadh sa scoil. I 1974, nuair a tháinig an 5ú agus 6ú múinteoir chun na scoile, cuireadh prefab eile dá-sheomra leis an scoil.

In the late 1960’s and during the 1970’s the population of Bearna increased rapidly.  In 1971, a two-roomed prefab was added and by 1972 there were 4 teachers in the school.  In 1974, when the 5th and 6th teachers were appointed, another two-roomed prefab was added to the school.

I 1982 tógadh an fhoirgneamh dá-stór atá in úsáid anois chun freastal ar dhaonra na háite, a bhí fós ag méadú. In 2010, leagadh an dá prefab a bhí fágtha agus tógadh dá sheomra ranga nua-ainseartha ina áit. In 2013, tógadh seomra nua Oideacha Speisialta, a osclaíonn amach ar ghairdín na scoile ar chúl.

In 1982 the current two-storey building was erected to cater for the ever increasing population in the area.  This replaced the old building and prefabs in accommodating all of the pupils.  In later years, two of the prefabs again came into use as classrooms.  However, in the summer of 2010, Scoil Shéamais Naofa removed the two remaining prefabs, and replaced them with two modern, newly built classrooms.

In the summer of 2013, a prefab which had been in use as a Special Education Room, was replaced with a permanent building, housing two Special Education Rooms and ancillary services.  This building opens onto our recently-developed school garden.
